Nulsen Disability Services

On 18 October 2024, Nulsen celebrates 70 years of supporting people with complex disability in Western Australia.

Starting as the family-founded Mental Incurable Children’s Association in 1954, Nulsen has evolved and adapted to an everchanging landscape into a leading organisation that today, supports around 200 people across 60+ residential settings with a 700-strong team of employees.

This timeline is a snapshot of some of the key moments in our journey. There are many more events, people and achievements throughout Nulsen’s history that would sit equally among those featured.

Most of the events not in this timeline are, in fact, included in the compendium publication The Nulsen Story: 70 years of empowering people to live their best life published as part of our official 70-year anniversary celebrations.

This document and The Nulsen Story seek to capture seven decades of unwavering commitment to supporting people with respect, dignity and compassion. Through these publications, we honour the resilience and achievements of all who has walked this path with us – our employees, families, community partners, and all who have made our work possible.

Most importantly, we honour the people that Nulsen supports now and over the years. You are the reason we exist, and we shall forever be grateful for the love and joy you provide so freely.

We hope that we’ve given you the best we’ve had, and that you’ve breathed easier because of our existence.

Let’s step back in time…

Our
Founders

Frank Anderson’s news story won a quick response from other parents. Within a month the Mentally Incurable Children’s Association was formed ‘to establish a special institution to care for microcephalic children and so ease the strain on parents’.

Here are the inaugural office bearers:

Francis John Anderson

As Secretary, Francis played a crucial role in establishing the foundation of Nulsen Disability Services. His dedication to helping families with children who have complex disabilities led to the creation of an organization that would support thousands of people over the next 70 years.

Secretary

William Robert Burns

As the first President of Nulsen, William provided strong leadership during the organization’s formative years. His vision and commitment to creating better support systems for families with children who have complex disabilities set the standard for Nulsen’s mission and values.

President

Lloyd John Summerton

As Treasurer, Lloyd ensured the financial stability of Nulsen during its early years. His careful management of resources and commitment to transparency helped establish the organization as a trusted and sustainable provider of disability services in Western Australia.

In 1954, a father speaks up for some the world forgets...

Gwen was a young mum on the edge of a breakdown. Her daughter was born with complex disabilities and needed tending around the clock, which left no time to care for her other youngsters. Gwen’s health was failing. Unable to cope with placing their daughter in the Claremont Mental Hospital, her husband Frank Anderson approached The Daily News, hoping something could be done to help parents like themselves.

n
From Frank Anderson's story,
Nulsen Disability Services was born.

Today, Nulsen is one of Western Australia’s leading disability services organisations focusing on people with complex disabilities. In this, our 60th year, we’d like to share with you stories of our history and the organisation that we’ve become.
